After Otto Dix’s Poet Iwar von Lücken (1926)

who is he
this poet
who lived
diagonally to life
           his brown suit
           hanging in jowls
           over his soft-
           angled frame
a man who saw
beauty in the
yellow-rose bloom
of a beer bottle
           why does he cleave
           to a chair which
           can’t hold him
           upright & turn
his back on an angel
offering salvation
on the other side
of the window
           somewhere
           his poems
           are buried in an
           unmarked grave
