Besides the more imaginative story-poems, David Perman gives us some gentle and uncomplicated personal reminiscences alongside elegies and anecdotes. He also has fun playing with language – for instance finding multiple rhymes for ‘attitude’ (with an ultimately serious purpose) or, in the title poem, reflecting amusingly on words and phrases that have come clattering into the English language during his lifetime.

David Perman is better known as a supporter of poetry than a poet. He was one of the founders of the still-vigorous Ware Poets in 1991 and in the same year established the Rockingham Press. He has published collections by more than 120 poets as well as anthologies of Turkish and Persian poetry in translation.
